Driftwood

With the lovely, winding Onion Creek crossing FM 150 three times within a few square miles, it is understandable how the small community of Driftwood received its name.  This quaint town features a Methodist Church which is over 100 years old, an historic cemetery which includes the remains of Civil War veterans, and several popular ranchette communities.  The community is charmingly rural but is just a short drive from Austin, Wimberley or IH-35.

A few miles down the road is the famous Salt Lick Restaurant & Vineyard which is a major attraction for visitors from around the world. Drive a few miles west to Driftwood Estate Vineyards and relax while sampling wine on a limestone, oak shaded hilltop overlooking the vineyard.  If Italian food is your preference, visit expansive Duchman Family Winery and Trattoria Lisina Restaurant which is located a few miles southeast.

Across from the Salt Lick is Camp Ben McCulloch which was originally purchased in 1904 by a group of Confederate Veterans as a camp ground for their annual gathering.  Camp Ben, as it is known by the locals, is located on 40 acres with approximately ½ mile of Onion Creek frontage.  Camp Ben McCulloch is open to the public for camping, swimming, picnicking and for weddings and special events.  The 3rd Friday in June starts the annual Camp Ben McCulloch Reunion which is open to the public and brings campers from near and far.  The week long Reunion features a carnival, daily programs, food and dancing.  In April, the facility is used as a campground for participants in the Blue Grass Festival.
