Blanco

Offering peaceful, small town living, Blanco is nestled in the Hill Country between San Antonio and Austin. The Blanco River flows through the city limits adding to this quaint city’s charm.  The economy in the area is based on ranching and a growing flower business. With lavender farms scattered among the scenic hills, lavender based products are then marketed nationally.

The town itself is rich in history. At the center of the town square and amidst the downtown Blanco National Historic District is the stately Old Blanco County Courthouse, built in 1888. The Old Courthouse is an outstanding example of Second Empire style architecture and is a Texas Historic Landmark. The Courthouse was used by Blanco County for only four years before the County seat was moved to Johnson City, after which the Courthouse was used for a variety of purposes including a school, office building, museum, theater, opera house, library, restaurant and, most notably, a general hospital from 1937 to 1961. Many local residents were born in the building. In an effort to prevent the dismantling of the Courthouse in the late 1980’s, The Blanco County Courthouse Preservation Society was established.

There are many attractions in and around Blanco. For camping, fishing or swimming, visit the Blanco State Park which features one mile of the lovely Blanco River. The private Yett Memorial Park is located just south of Blanco and the Bindseil City Park is located on the town square. Families enjoy touring the many lavender farms in the area or the Arnosky Family Farm. For a change of pace take a tour of the Real Ale Brewery located just north of the town square. San Antonio, Fredericksburg, Johnson City, Wimberley, Dripping Springs and Austin offer many attractions and are only a short drive from Blanco.
